Visiting a beautician as a man: how your first pit stop works

Entrance to Die Männer Werkstatt in Munich with a black awning: a man's first visit to a beautician

Yes, as a man you can quite naturally go to a beautician. At the Männer Werkstatt, you sit in a studio built for men only. Your first visit is quickly told: book online, arrive, choose a drink, briefly discuss what you want, lean back. Further down you can read who treats you and what is best to start with for your first service interval.

Can a man go to a beautician?

Yes, of course. Beauty care is grooming, and every man needs it. At the Männer Werkstatt in Munich, you get it in a studio that treats only men.

After all, beauty care doesn’t mean make-up. It means trimmed and filed nails, feet without hard skin, thoroughly cleansed facial skin and eyebrows that are in shape. None of that is women’s business. It is maintenance for the body you use every day.

Typical ways in are the Manicure for men in Munich and the Pedicure for men in Munich. Others start with a Facial treatment for men in Munich or have their back done at Waxing for men in Munich. You can see everything at a glance in the Beauty treatments for men at a glance, including AQAFACIAL™, massages and, at Amalienstraße, Hair & Beard.

That the first step still takes some nerve is normal. Our Treatwell reviews are remarkably often about the first visit. One writes: “A man doesn’t go to the beautician every day, after all.” The Werkstatt exists for exactly these men.

Does it make sense to go to a beautician?

If you want to stay well groomed in the long run, yes. A lot of it you can only do halfway at home: the cuticles, for example, the hard skin on your feet or pore extractions. And if you come regularly, you don’t start from zero every time.

How often you should come depends mainly on your skin and on what you want to achieve. Your beautician will tell you after the first appointment. You then simply book the next one online.

What is different in a studio just for men?

It starts with the room. No plush and pastel, but designer and original retro furniture, solid brick walls and custom-made design elements. Here things get filed, peeled and planed, in an atmosphere where you don’t feel like a foreign body. Our motto for it is #daheimbeifreunden.

Then the drink. With your treatment you get water, coffee, drinks or Tegernseer beer. Sounds like a gimmick, but beer and coffee come up surprisingly often in our reviews.

The language is different too. Our packages are called “Die Schnelle Nummer”, “Der Klassiker”, “Das Monument” or “Start your Engine”, so you don’t have to learn any beauty vocabulary to know what you’re booking. How the Werkstatt ticks and who is behind it, you can read at This is the Männer Werkstatt in Munich.

And then the regulars. Our reviews keep coming back to someone returning and wanting it “as always”. Once you’ve taken the first step, you apparently like to stay.

Who treats you?

Only trained professionals work at the Männer Werkstatt: master hairdressers, state-certified beauticians and master beauticians, with experience and regular training. For beauty treatments you are therefore usually treated by women who see men’s hands, men’s feet and men’s skin every day. For them, your visit is routine. For you, it’s round one. That works.

Want to see the same person next time? When booking online, you can choose your specialist. For Hair & Beard at Amalienstraße, master hairdressers stand at the chair.

Which treatment for the first visit?

Start with whatever annoys you most. Cracked cuticles? Hard skin on your feet? Dull skin after a long week? For every problem area there is a starting point that is done in 10 to 40 minutes. One client did it this way: “just to try it out”.

More on the individual starting points: what happens during a pedicure is explained in Pedicure for men: what actually happens? How a facial treatment works is covered in Facial cleansing for men: process and cost, and what is behind AQAFACIAL™ in What is an Aquafacial?

Werkstatt tip: Not sure? Then take the “Klassiker” for hands or feet. It doesn’t take long, costs a manageable amount, and you see the result straight away. At your second appointment, you’ll know whether you want to shift up a gear.

What does the first visit cost?

Less than many think. The cheapest way in is the manicure “Die Schnelle Nummer” for €25, and the classics you can’t go wrong with the first time cost between €49 and €59. So that you don’t have to guess, our manicure and pedicure packages always follow the same logic, in four gears:

LevelMeant forManicurePedicure
“Die Schnelle Nummer”little time, just the essentials10 min., €2520 min., €35
“Der Klassiker”the solid standard40 min., €4940 min., €59
“Das Monument”more wellness, more massage50 min., €7550 min., €85
“Die Werkstatt”it doesn’t get bigger than this60 min., €9970 min., €109

It’s the same for facial treatments, except that the gears there are called “Start your Engine”, “Comfort Mode”, “Sport Mode” and “Track Mode”. So before booking you always see what you get, how long it takes and what it costs.

How your first appointment works, from booking to leaving

  1. Booking: On the website, click “Book online”, choose a studio (Wilhelmstraße or Amalienstraße), then pick the service and time. Bookings, and first bookings in particular, must be made online.
  2. Arriving: Jacket off, choose a drink. One client describes in his review how the “last bit of uncertainty” vanished when he was offered a beer.
  3. A quick chat: Your beautician asks what you’d like and what bothers you. For facial treatments this is called an assessment: she takes a close look at your skin and tailors the treatment to it.
  4. Treatment: You lean back. If anything is uncomfortable or too firm, say so. It will be adjusted, no discussion.
  5. Tips for home: At the end, if you like, you get tips on how to stay in shape until your next appointment. Feel free to ask what you can do yourself and what you’d better leave alone.
  6. Next service interval: Once you’ve been, you know how it works. The easiest way to book your next appointment is straight away online.

Two problem areas, one appointment: combos

Hands and feet at the same time? When booking online, you pick each treatment individually and combine them as you like. The calendar then shows you the free appointments automatically. Ready-made, there are the Combos and Performance Packages, which bundle several treatments into one appointment. For getting started, these are suitable, for example:

  • Combo: Manicure & pedicure “Der Klassiker”: hands and feet in one go, 80 minutes, €108.
  • “Freistoß” from the Lothar Matthäus World Champion Edition: manicure and pedicure “Klassiker” plus “Goldeneyes” collagen eye pads, 80 minutes, €118.
  • Combo: #vonkopfbisfuss “Der Klassiker”: manicure and pedicure plus Hair & Beard, 140 minutes, €192, Amalienstraße only.

Don’t want to come alone? Stereo treatments with a mate and group sessions are possible too. It’s best to ask by phone or via WhatsApp for more.

The voucher as a door opener

Many men don’t come for the first time on their own, but with a voucher in hand. Often a wife or girlfriend gave it to them as a present. We read that in the reviews again and again: received a voucher, went along sceptically, became a regular.

Is there a voucher lying in your drawer right now? Get it out. And if you know someone who “would never do something like that”: below you’ll find the way to the voucher shop.

Wilhelmstraße or Amalienstraße?

There are two Werkstatt studios in Munich, at Wilhelmstraße 32 in Schwabing and at Amalienstraße 41 in Maxvorstadt, by the university. For your first beauty appointment it doesn’t matter which studio you choose. Manicure, pedicure, facial treatments, AQAFACIAL™, waxing, eyebrows and massages are available at both.

There is one difference: Hair & Beard by BaBylissPRO and the private spa “10 the Lodge by Lothar Matthäus” are only at Amalienstraße. So if you want to get a haircut and a manicure done on the same day, go there, especially as besides coffee and Tegernseer there is also BUSHMILLS whiskey and our own beer. When booking online, you choose the studio in the first step, after which you only see the services available there.

Frequently asked questions about the first visit

Do I need to prepare anything before my first appointment?

Hardly anything. For the facial treatment it’s best to arrive freshly shaven, because the skin should be as smooth as possible, without beard hair. For the pedicure, the cleansing foot bath is part of it anyway, so there’s no need to scrub your feet beforehand. Otherwise: arrive on time, choose a drink, tell us what bothers you. Your beautician takes care of the rest.

Can I combine two treatments in one appointment?

Yes. When booking online, you choose each treatment individually and combine them as you like, including treatments that have no combo. The calendar then shows you the free appointments automatically. Ready-made, there is for example the combo Manicure & pedicure “Der Klassiker”, which takes 80 minutes and costs €108; the “Freistoß” from the World Champion Edition adds collagen eye pads (80 minutes, €118). If you want to combine beauty treatments with Hair & Beard, book the combo #vonkopfbisfuss at Amalienstraße.

What is the difference between a beauty studio and a barbershop?

A barbershop is about hair and beard, that is, cutting and shaving. A beauty studio is about skin, hands, feet and eyebrows, for example with a facial treatment, manicure, pedicure or waxing. Die Männer Werkstatt does both: beauty treatments at Wilhelmstraße and Amalienstraße, Hair & Beard at Amalienstraße.

What happens if something is uncomfortable during the treatment?

Then you simply say so. Your beautician adjusts the pressure or the pace, or changes the next step. That applies to the massage just as much as to the cuticles or facial extractions. Nobody expects you to grit your teeth. It’s about you, not about getting through a programme.
